Renewing Bonds: Rebuild & Restore Family Connections Support Groups Overview:

What Does It Mean to Rebuild & Restore Family Connections?

Divorce, legal separation, and loss of any other significant relationship can lead to a deep feeling of isolation and fear.  Often people who experience a sudden absence of a steady person in their life also experience loneliness, betrayal if they are cast out by friends and family during the event, and grief from the loss of people, full-time custody of children, their home, relatives and friendships, and even financial support.  The greater the number of losses, the longer the grief stage may last.  Sometimes people experiencing this isolation make the choice to avoid other relationships out of a fear of criticism or judgment and this can lead to feelings of depression, anger, sadness, despair, and anxiety.  Divorces, separations, and loss of relationships that are highly conflicted are often not publicly discussed which leads to a further isolation.  This is exacerbated when others in our support group minimize or devalue the significance of the loss.  Part of the grieving process is being allowed to discuss the end and emotions surrounding the fallout.  When people feel conflicted, they often avoid discussing it with the hurting party which keeps that person stuck in grief.

Children who are caught in the cross-hairs of divorce often are not allowed a safe space to air their emotions around these same significant losses.  Often children are taken out of schools, homes, away from friends, supportive extended families, may lose teachers, security items that are not allowed to leave one parent's home to another, and suffer at school because they are too afraid of judgment and criticism from peers.  Children can suffer the same symptoms as adults, and even stronger emotions of betrayal because they have an innate desire to love both parents, and are often caught in the dilemma of hurt feelings getting in the way of healthy co-parenting.

How Is Rebuilding & Restoring Family Connections In A Group Setting Completed?

Guided by a trained therapist, you will learn and understand the process of grief after significant loss from breakdown of relationships, separation, and divorce.  Groups will discuss group topics and troubleshoot individual circumstances to learn how to instill new hope, acceptance of the loss, new perspectives on the loss, building coping mechanisms for further conflict, and support for others who are grieving.  A Support Group will help you identify where you are at in the grieving process and what you need to heal and move forward in life. It will help you express different circumstances and receive feedback from peers, and allow you a safe place to explore your relationship dynamics without judgment. Renewing Bonds: Rebuild & Restore Family Connections Support Group focuses on developing healthy emotional expression and clearly stating needs and feelings so that others can help without confusion, assumptions, resentment, and misunderstandings that lead to deep conflict. Renewing Bonds also offers a place where Mothers / Fathers / Teens / and Children can find the support and space to heal at the same time without the worry of procuring child care and finding empathy for each member of the family as therapists work to help identify the whole families process of grief to lower anxiety, grief, loneliness, isolation, and fear.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

Our Renewing Bonds Support Group is offered as a once a week 12-week program.  Those that participate in groups are asked to do weekly readings and complete the content for each week, however, applying it and processing occurs at the participant's pace.  Some group members have returned for repeat groups, and some find one 12-week session to be enough to advance onto other content.  Divorce and loss aren't linear, there are ups and downs, and sometimes issues arise that cause upset for the entire family as custody matters are dealt with in the Courts, betrayal and trust issues arise, anxiety, and depression come forth due to a lack of communication; therefore, sessions and Groups are available repeatedly for those finding a need for support for more than one 12-week session.
